Got to connect back to Latin American music yesterday @ RASA! I’m not a big fan of Samba or Salsa music… Those cowbell beats often get on my nerves (and after all in 99% of the time I’d rather see cowbells remain on the animals they were created for
).
but yesterday, no cowbell, no timbales but maracas (in a way I had never heard them), cajon and a goat-skinned drum provided the beats for the string musician: bass, bandola, cuatro (4 string guitar) and harp. OF course it wasn’t all instrumental and we could enjoy some Spanish singing aswell.
Despite hearing my mum playing harp for already 30 years, Carlos Rojas, the eldest and harp player, made me realised that there is a whole universe in harp that still needs to be discovered… All 8 musicians of Cimarrón were incredibly talented… And played so tight that I though:
- I’m doing a great job at monitor and they can perfectly hear each other
- I’m not doing so well and then they are even better than what I think!
Fortunately for me, I got so many compliments after the show, that I know that it wasn’t the latter option
